Chengalpattu Medical College has completed its Golden Jubilee in the year 2015. The Department of Community Medicine is functioning since the existence of the college. The Department is located in the second floor of the old examination block.

MISSION:

The Department of Community Medicine facilitates the students to “think globally and act locally” and committed to educate the medical students to be community oriented primary care physicians.

GOAL:

The goal of undergraduate teaching / training in Community Medicine is to achieve “Better Health for All” and in turn to develop socio-economic status of the country.

OBJECTIVES:

After completion of training, the MBBS student should be able to:

1. Recognize the physical, social, psychological, environmental and economic determinants of health and disease.
2. Apply the clinical skills to diagnose and to treat comprehensively and function as a community and first contact physician.
3. Apply the epidemiological principles to identify, prioritize and manage common health problems at the individual, family and community levels and deal with public health emergencies.
4. Perform as an effective leader of health team at primary care level in planning, supervising & monitoring the services of health professionals in health team.
5. Use the research competencies gained in accessing and appraising scientific information, presentation and publication of research findings.

CRRI TRAINING:

The CRRI’s are posted for about 3 months in the department of Community Medicine. They are posted in Primary Health Centre’s, Urban Health Centre, CLTRI, Chest Clinic, ENT and Opthalmology departments.

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES:

The Department guides the undergraduate and postgraduates in conduction of research activities and provides technical inputs to faculty members in their research projects. The faculty members of the department are involved in various research projects and published about 25 articles in reputed journals. Training on Research Methodology and Bio-statistics is also conducted.

FIELD PRACTICE AREAS:

The Following PHC’s & UHC are identified as field practice areas for Rural/Urban training activities. Acharapakkam PHC is the Rural Health & Training Centre and Hanumanthaputheri UHC is the Urban Health and Training Centre. Other rural centres attached are Manampathy PHC and Sadras PHC.
