SHORT HISTORY:

The prestigious Chengalpattu medical college started functioning as a district head quarters hospital and in 1965 it was elevated to a teaching institution with 250 beds for clinical training. The institution which is 46 years old is the 6 of its kind to be started in Tamil Nadu and was started with the basic departments of Medicine , Surgery , Obstetrics and Gynaecology, ENT, Ophthalmology, Psychiatry chest medicine. Today the institution has gone to include Cardiology , Neurology , Paeediatric surgery, Plastic surgery and more.

The ENT department that has been functioning since the birth of the hospital was initially in the old building. Currently it is located in the first floor of the OP building. Over the years the department has seen tremendous growth. What started with just one Professor and Assistant professor has now expanded to include a Professor , one Associate professor , one Assistant professors, one Senior residents and two Junior residents..

The department that was functioning with just the basic facilities of puretone audiometry has grown to include modern facilities like laryngoscopy, OAE, BERA.

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES:

The department has been constantly involved in teaching activities for the undergraduates from the time the ENT subject was included in the curriculum. Regular weekly classes are taken by the Professor and Assistant professors on various topics according to the curriculum prescribed by the MCI. The chalk & board teaching with which the department started has now advanced to the use of modern aids of teaching such as powerpoint presentations projected with a laptop and LCD projector.

In order to monitor the performances of the students the department conducts regular internal assessments in both theory and clinical. The department also conducts seminars, symposiums and continued medical educations(CME) from time to time on various topics.

PRIZES AND AWARDS:

The ENT department has been conducting Prize Medal Exam from the year 2008 in association with KANGESH BALASUBRANIYAM TRUST.

The trust is headed by Dr. B.Sundarajan M.S. D.L.O. who was the former senior assistant professor of CHMC.
