SHORT HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENTS:

Department of thoracic medicine was initiated in 1980 in this prestigious insitiution., as a full fledged tuberculosis unit under National Tuberculosis programme, & now the department has emerged to not only concern tuberculosis but also for other respiratory diseases like COPD, BRONCHIAL ASTHMA, LUNG CANCER ETC… with specialty care..

The speciality clinic now caters the needs of patients with

  • COPD
  • Parenchymal lung diseases
  • Lung cancer

With the help attached laboratory with specialized fluorescent AFB bacilli screening and radiographing unit.

PERIODIC ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES HELD IN THE DEPARTMENT:

Research and publications:

  1. ICMR PROJECT: Epidemiology, demographic and clinical profile of Tuberculosis patients attending Dept. of thoracic medicine, chengalpattu medical college OPD, has been published.
  2. Ongoing thesis, on “Effectiveness of educational Intervention of awareness of Tuberculosis among clients at kanchipuram district” is being conducted with the help of Department.

CME/ Workshops:

On an average two continuous medical education programmes are conducted per year for the undergraduates and post graduates, especially one on National tuberculosis day.

O.P days and timings: Monday to Saturday From 8.00am to 2.00pm

I.P unit and admission day: admissions made on all the working days under the Department of Thoracic medicine in medicine wards and comprehensive chief Minister’s health insurance ward(500 ward)

List of laboratory tests performed: staining of AFB bacilli with specialized fluorescent staining and LED Microscope.

Average laboratory statistics: 3000/ annum
