“EYES ARE THE WINDOWS TO THE SOUL”

The department of Ophthalmology was started in 1965 as the Government Chengalpattu Medical College and Hospital was started. The department serves as the major referral centre for all eye problems, providing medical and surgical treatment to the patients of Chengalpattu and nearby Kanchipuram. The department annually attends 30,000 patients on OPD basis. We provide services for refraction and minor surgical procedures on OPD basis.

Speciality clinics on stipulated days provides state of art care at free of cost. These clinics include – retina, uvea, cornea, glaucoma, squint and neuroophthalmology, orbit and occuloplasty. We are having sophisticated instruments like Autorefractometer, Keratometer, Lensometer,Non contact tonometer, perkins tonometer, B-Scan, A-Scan, Humphrey visual field analyser, fundus camera, OCT machine, Synaptophore, ND YAG laser for the benefit of patients and residents.

Our department caters to the poorest of the poor in rural ares and provides a comprehensive range of medical and surgical eye care for the protection, prevention, enhancement and restoration of vision for all age groups.

We have a separate block for Outpatient and Inpatient services with operation theatres.We see more than 100 patients in OPD everyday. More than 30 beds are available in our wards. We are performing speciality surgeries for cataract(SICS, Phaco), glaucoma(Trabeculectomy, peripheral iridectomy), orbit and occuloplasty(lid reconstruction, lid tumour excision, ptosis correction, Blepharoplasty, Evisceration, DCR,DCT, Cannaliculi repair), retina ( Intra vitreal injections- steroids, anti VEGF, Laser- PRP)

We are having 24 hours functioning eye bank for collecting corneas and the same are being transplanted. We regularly conduct eye donation awareness campaigns. National Eye Donation Awareness Fortnight (25th August to 8th September) was celebrated in our department to promote eye donation and to encourage the people to donate eyes.

We also celebrated World Glaucoma Awareness Week (8th March to 14th March) in order to create awareness and to screen people for glaucoma. We conducted Glaucoma awareness rally and Corporate Social Responsibility Launching programme followed by Inauguration of new instruments by respected chief guest Mr.A.John Louis, I.A.S., District collector, chengalpattu.

ACADEMIC SERVICES:

We have started post graduate course (MS., Ophthalmology – 2 seats per year) from 2018 and there are 100 undergraduate students per year.

UNDERGRADUATE TEACHING ACTIVITY:

Well organised teaching schedule and experienced faculties provide excellent oppurtunities for students to build their concepts. Regular practical classes with case discussion between faculty and students help them to tone their clinical skills. Daily practical learning in department helps students to become well versed with instruments and simple procedures. Rotatory OT postings help them to understand various surgical procedures.

POSTGRADUATE TEACHING ACTIVITY:

By conducting CME’s and organising guest lectures by eminent professors helps to improve the standard of learning for postgraduates.the post graduates receive clinical teaching continuously during their postings. Detailed discussions in the management of interesting and challenging cases encourage to instill confidence in residents towards managing patients.

Regular seminar presentations, journal club provides excellent oppurtunity for residents to review journal and present research paper.

With well equiped OT and experienced faculties , post graduates get adequate surgical exposure under guidance.
