ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT AND FACILITIES
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT & FACILITIES:
Dissection Hall
The department has a state of the art dissection hall, which is well ventilated with exhaust fans and all the essential teaching aids, like black boards, LCD projector, skeletons and laminated charts. There are 20 dissection tables. It has a capacity for accommodating 150 students. Separate rooms for storage of wet specimens and bones are available inside the dissection hall. Anterooms for male and female students with washbasins and lockers are also available.
Cadaver storage
Cadavers are received in the department through Voluntary Whole Body Donation (VWBD) and unclaimed from GH. These bodies are embalmed and preserved for academic & research purposes. The embalming suite has an embalming machine and the required chemicals. There is a cold storage room & cadaver tank room. Three storage tanks are present in the Tank room. A burial pit is located behind the Dissection Hall of the anatomy department, from which bones are collected periodically for study purposes.
Voluntary Whole Body donation
The expanding needs in medical education and research necessitates more body donations. Fortunately, many individuals have voluntarily donated their bodies because of the simplification of rules by the Government in recent years. The Department of Anatomy, Chengalpattu Medical College accepts registrations for Voluntary Whole Body donations and also receives donated bodies periodically.
The procedure for registration and handing over of deceased is given separately as a link for reference.
Histology Lab
The histology laboratory is full fledged with all the basic facilities for slide preparation and also equipped with enough self illuminating binocular/ monocular microscopes, light microscopes and dissection microscopes. It has about 100 laminated histology charts, slide cabinets with numerous general and systemic histology slides for the students to get a clear understanding of microanatomy. Separate preparation room for the purpose of histology slide preparation along with required equipments are available.
Research lab
A well equipped research lab with needed equipments with microtomes, Hot air oven, Incubator, self illuminating microscopes, etc is available for the purpose of research and other academic activities.
Museum
The department houses a museum displaying around 375 instructive and explicit wet and dry specimens which are preserved and mounted with dexterity in the areas of gross anatomy, embryology, osteology and comparative anatomy. These silent teachers (preserved human specimens) are always there, enabling students to enrich their knowledge in Anatomy. Around 100 models in the areas of embryology, gross anatomy, histology are displayed. It also houses beautiful illustrations in the form of revolving charts, hanging charts and wall mounted paintings in various areas of anatomy. Museum is provided with adequate seating for students and there are two attached rooms for the preparation and mounting of specimens.
Library
An in-house library with a capacity for accommodating 25 students is equipped with all the latest anatomy books in different sections of anatomy numbering around 300 along with copies of national & international journals for immediate reference for the students.
