ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The prestigious Chengalpattu Medical College started functioning as District Head Quarters Hospital and in 1965 it was elevated to a teaching institution with 250 beds for clinical training. The institution which is 59 years old is the 6th of its kind to be started in Tamilnadu and was started with the basic departments. Today the institution has gone to include many super-specialities too.
The Pediatrics department has been functioning since the birth of the hospital. Over the years, there has been tremendous growth. The department that was functioning with just the basic facilities now has separate liquid oxygen plant and central oxygen supply. It also has a separate generator for power back up and a lift for patients. There are dedicated blocks for OPD, PICU, District Early Intervention Centre, and Newborn wards.
We got approval from the Medical Council of India for starting DM Neonatology course from August 2019. We have 4 DM (Neonatology) seats per year that are approved by NMC. We are having a 67 bedded Neonatal unit that provides tertiary neonatal care with advanced facilities. This includes a 18 bedded level 3, 12 bedded level 2, and a family centered care unit which includes a 10 bedded Mother Newborn Care Unit, and a 5 bedded Kangaroo Father Care Unit. We are having around 1000 intramural deliveries per month with around 300 neonatal admissions per month which includes extramural babies too. We receive extramural referral from all our surrounding districts of Villupuram, Kanchipuram, Thiruvallur, Cuddalore and Thiruvannamalai districts. Our follow up unit has a one of its kind sensory garden as part of the early intervention services and also there is a 100 days nutrition park for educating mothers.
