The Department of Microbiology is catering many services which include specimen collection and reporting through LIMS in the central lab.

The following diagnostic lab tests are performed in the department.

  • Bacteriology: Staining, culture & sensitivity
  • Immunology: ASO, CRP, RA
  • Serology: WIDAL, RPR , Scrub typhus, Leptospirosis
  • Virology: Hepatitis (A, B, C), Dengue, Chikungunya
  • Molecular virology: (Covid-19,HBV & HCV viral load)
  • Mycobacteriology: AFB staining
  • Mycology: KOH mount, fungal culture
  • Parasitology: Saline mount, Iodine mount for ova/cyst
  • Environmental Surveillance: OT sterility, Critical units (aerobic and anaerobic )

The Department also receives samples from many PHCs and GHs in and around the district for the OT sterility, blood bag sterility & clinical samples under IELS. Microbiology Diagnostic Laboratory performs on an average of 16,000 tests per month.

We have State Reference Laboratory for HIV testing Laboratory under NACO programme which receive samples from 3 districts( Villupuram, Tiruvanamalai & Cuddalore) ICTC & Blood bank centers (78 ICTC centre & 10 Blood bank) for EQAS programme (half yearly)
and Quality control rechecking & retesting programme (quarterly) & the lab has got NABL accreditation.

                In addition the department plays an important role in Hospital Infection Control Committee & Bio-Medical Waste Management. Training on Bio Medical Waste Management & Infection control practices for medical, paramedical, allied health science, nursing students, staff nurses, CRMIs, postgraduates, Assistant professors are done quarterly. The training is also included in foundation course for newly joined MBBS students.

We are also involved in IHIP, National Viral Hepatitis Control Program & EQAS program.

About 2000 to 2300 HBsAg tests and 1900 to 2000 Anti HCV tests are carried out monthly. The Hepatitis B viral DNA and Hepatitis C viral RNA load are done by RT PCR, monthly 40 to 50 tests are done

In EQAS PROGRAM we participate in bacteriology EQAS quarterly, Mycology, and blood borne virus serology and parasitology 6 months once. 95 percent proficiency is being obtained in EQAS.

The academic program is also extended, like Undergraduate CBME curriculum for 100 students, the CBME based postgraduate program with intake of 2 postgraduates per year involving more of discussion and seminars. Our Postgraduates have participated in poster presentation in various conferences.

The Department conducts classes for paramedical courses like 2 year DMLT course,4 years BSc Nursing course, Allied Health Science courses like 3 year Bsc.MLT,, BSc respiratory therapy, BSc cardiac technnology, BSc Dialysis technology,BSc Optometry, BSc Physician Assistant, BSC Accident & Emergency care technology, BSC OT & Anaesthesia technology & others like MRD course students.

EMERGENCY OBSTETRICS SERVICES:

  • A fully equipped round the clock casualty for triage and initiation of zero delay treatment.
  • A clean labour room with competency to provide delivery services including instrumental deliveries like vacuum assisted and forceps assisted deliveries, ability to manage immediate post partum complications like PPH, manual removal of placenta. Abortion care with MVA and dilatation and curettage facilities are also provided.
  • Theatre complexes for Emergency and Elective LSCS, cervical encerclage procedures, surgical management of PPH, MTP procedures, Ectopic pregnancy management
  • This is backed up by a highly equipped and competent ICU and HDU facility to cater the emergent needs of high risk pregnancies enabling multidisciplinary care without delay
  • A 24/7 blood bank to support the emergency needs is also available

GYNECOLOGICAL SERVICES:

  • A well equipped ward for patients with gynaecological complaints with insurance coverage.
  • A fully furnished well equipped OT for planned gynaecology procedures like hysterectomy, myomectomy and ovarian cystectomies with all updated techniques like hysteroscopy, laproscopy etc. 
  • Laparoscopic approach to gynaec and infertility procedures are the vogue in Chengalpattu Medical college nowadays.
  • Availability of hysteroscopy and availability of hysteroscopic guided procedures have enabled better management of polyp, submucosalmyoma, sub fertility and early identification of gynaecological malignancies.
  • Gyneac oncological surgeries are also a available addition to the repoitre of services provided. We have coordinated with Karapettai surgical oncology team and do provide onco services here at CMCH itself.

FAMILY WELFARE SERVICES runs postnatal clinic,contraception clinic,sterilization services

All contraceptives are available at the OPD desk

CONTRACEPTION CLINIC:

Daily clinic to offer the needful couple contraception including emergency contraception by cafeteria method is available. There are Separate counsellor for motivating patient on both temporary and permanent methods.

A separate OT complex is dedicated to family welfare services to provide services as following Puerperal Sterlisation , Laproscopic Sterlisation, Interval Sterlisation,MTP WITH TAT/ LS,CuT insertion and removal

TRAINING SERVICES

OG department of Chengalpattu Medical college serves as training centre for Cemonc and Emonc services, family welfare services to PHC medical officers, District head quarters hospital medical officers, staff nurses and physician assistants. We also provide training for physician assistant, paraclinical services .We provide laparoscopic training for Medical Officers and other skill training for PHC officers, VIA training for Medical Officers, colposcopy training for gynecologists, LS training for gynecologists

Neonatology services

The Institute is well equipped with neonatology unit with ventilators, exchange Transfusions done, RDS are managed by surfactants .

USG facilities were available in OPD, Wards, labour wards and in the departments.

Universal screening for GDM is being done routinely; all cases are managed by protocols formed by evidence based medicine Pap smear, cervical biopsy, colposcopy done here.
