ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Orthopedics in Chengalpattu Medical College Hospital was inaugurated in the year of 1965 and has been functioning successfully, and has been catering to the needs of poor patients for more than 50 years. Department of Orthopaedics is one of the major departments of this hospital and patients with general orthopedic problems and trauma patients get treated here daily in large numbers. We have 350 to 400 OPD patients on an average per day and 80-100 patients are being treated as inpatients, 200-250 surgeries being performed monthly.
All major procedures including fracture fixations, Arthroscopy, Primary/Revision Joint Replacements, Spine surgeries, Pediatric orthopedic procedures and Deformity corrections are routinely done here. Since our institution is a tertiary referral centre for District Hospitals, Taluk Hospitals and Primary Health Centers in the districts of Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Vizhupuram and Tiruvannamalai, we get referral patients from these hospitals regularly. Since our hospital is situated on the GST road which is the major highway connecting Chennai to other cities of the state large number of trauma patients are received in casualty.
TAEI (Tamilnadu Accident and Emergency Care Initiative) ward started functioning in the existing casualty ward from 2007 onwards and has been functioning well. Department of Orthopaedics integrates with departments of general surgery, neurosurgery and plastic surgery for effective and smooth functioning of this TAEI ward.
Our Department consist of Outpatient Block, Administrative Block, Male Ortho ward, Female Ortho ward, Male post-op ward , Female post-op ward, Ortho OT Complex, Ortho ICU and Physiotherapy. Our department has evolved over several years from teaching the under graduate to teaching the post graduate.
The teaching schedule for undergraduate, includes regular clinical demonstration classes as well as theory classes. We train the CRRI in our department to enhance the knowledge in common orthopedic problem and their managements.
PG teaching schedule includes training in regular clinical examination, diagnosis, planning and execution of management (Conservative / Surgical ). They are also imparted necessary skills in managing the patients in their follow up period. They are guided to involve themselves in successful implementation of government programs. These post graduate are encouraged to attend and present papers in clinical society meeting, orthopedic courses and conferences to enhance their knowledge in orthopedics. We also conduct university exams for undergraduates and post graduates students. Our students are involved in several research activities.
