Department of Psychiatry in  Chengalpattu medical college  was started in the year 1977 as a small outpatient unit in the old hospital building near the railway station. Dr.Chandrasekaran was the first Psychiatrist posted in the department. In July 1978 SM Vasanthakumari joined the department as a clinical psychologist (now a days many medical college department do not have a trained clinical psychologist).

The department was run with the guidance and support of Dean Dr.P.Natrajan and RMO Dr.Rajagopalan. Two CRRIs Dr.Kumar and Dr.Murugesan were posted in the department to help in drug management for follow-up patients. New patients were screened and referred to IMH who were in need of admission and management. Psychological assessment and counselling was done in the department by the clinical Psychologist.

In October 1978, Psychiatry department was shifted to the new hospital. Dr.A.Ramanathan was posted as an Assistant Professor for a brief period though he again worked in the department from 1989 to 1995.

Some of other Assistant professors who worked were Dr.Syed Rahimudeen (1982 – 83), Dr.Samilal and Dr.Jeyamani for a short period. In the absence of Psychiatrists, Dr.Dhandapani MD (General Medicine) was posted in the department to manage outpatients. Epileptic patients would also be seen in Psychiatry department and then transferred to neurology department which was started 2 years later.

In 1986 two civil surgeons were posted in the department – Dr.S.Arunagiri worked for three years and Dr.V.Palaniappan worked for five years. A special mention should be made about Dr.Gowrishankar who took a lot of efforts to get a separate OP allotted for our department in the trauma ward of new building.

Dr.V.S.P.Bashyam, Dr.Vimala Rao, Dr.Gowrishankar, Dr.Mathrubootham, Dr.Kumar Babu, Dr.Rajkumar, Dr.Dayalan, Dr.Jayakar, Dr.V.R.Vivekanandan, Dr.S.Nambi, Dr.Soundarrajan, Dr.Rajarathinam, Dr.Deivasigamani, Dr.Krishnaram, Dr.C.Rmasubramaniam, Dr.Murugappan, Dr.Sathyanathan, Dr.Jayaprakash, Dr.Muralidaran were some of the psychiatrists responsible for the development of Psychiatry department during various periods.

It is worth mentioning our two pillars of the department that Dr.Rengaraj , Assistant Professor worked for nearly 15 years and Mrs.SM Vasanthakumari, assistant professor cum Clinical Psychologist worked for 29 years and retired in 2007.

A separate Psychiatry building was constructed in the year 2006 and the department started functioning from the new building since 2009, a separate Deaddiction ward started functioning nearby in the same year. Since 2008, Dr.Balakrisnan, Dr. Asokan, Dr.Shanmugaiah, Dr.Alexander, Dr.Ramanujam, Dr.Poornachandrika, Dr.Amudha, Dr.Shanthi,   worked as associate professor in our department. DrP.P.Kannan was professor from 2019 to 2021,  Dr.V.Sabitha from year 2019 to 2023 and Dr. Sukumar  the current professor & HOD in the department. Three postgraduate seats (MD) were allotted from the year 2016 and the department has established itself as a PG teaching department. Currently we have a 30 bedded inpatient unit. 20 beds for General Psychiatry and 10 beds for deaddiction unit.

Our GHPU (General hospital Psychiatry Unit) is the first in our state to start a High Dependency Unit with an attached Mini OT for ECT. Our department was the first to start a one-year training course “Psychiatric Support worker (PSW)” since 2021 as there was a shortage of manpower in all GHPU. Hope the Psychiatric support worker students would get benefitted in future (At least one PSW should be posted in all Mental Health establishments in our State) We have been conducting the National Level Undergraduate Quiz since 2016 and conducted the seventh edition in 2022 and earned a good response each year from the students.

Research Projects

  1. A study on sociodemographic profile, perceived support & mother infant bonding in post-partum mothers.
  2. A study on psychiatric morbidity, intimate partner violence and quality of life among spouses of male alcohol use disorder.
  3. A follow-up study on clinical profile, risk factors, course and outcome of bipolar-i mood disorder.
  4. A cross sectional study on the correlates of personality disorder among males with alcohol dependence syndrome undergoing outpatient treatment.
  5. Abnormal involuntary movements (aims) and metabolic syndrome in drug naive schizophrenia patients – a cross sectional study.
  6. Correlation between c-reactive protein levels with aggression and symptom severity in patients with schizophrenia”-a cross sectional study.

“Mananala Nallaatharavu Mandram”(MANAM) in our Medical/Nursing/Paramedical Colleges established on September 12th 2022.

This MaNaM will ensure empowerment of students by democratizing scientific knowledge through regular consistent awareness generation activities and training program on mental health. The students will be empowered to identify cues and symptoms related to psychological problems and offer immediate support to their peers.

The Department of Psychiatry of is the Nodal Department for MANAM initiative in Chengalpattu Medical College and take necessary steps as per the guidelines in successfully rolling out the program.

TANPSYCON 2023:

A NON PHARMA Funded (Self-Funded) Conference – Is it Feasible? – Yes

The 38th edition of Tamilnadu State Psychiatry Conference was held at Chengalpattu Medical College between 7th to 9th July 2023. The conference was organized by the Department of Psychiatry, Chengalpattu Medical College in a total non-Pharma funded manner for the first time in the history of any medical speciality conference/CME across India in last few decades.

The clout of the Pharmaceutical industry in conducting any conference/ academic events has grown vastly in the last few decades to the extent that they influence the way a conference has to be conducted. We observed the decline in the importance being given for scientific sessions and more credentials allotted for entertainment activities. The worst scenario is we were able to see delegates spending more time in the Pharma  stalls & entertainment arena. Hence our organizing team decided to depart from the traditional way of conducting a conference. How did we do it?

We involved undergraduate students, Paramedical students and Psychiatry Postgraduates of our institution and they all took care of the activities which an event management team would do in a conference. Revenue was generated from advertisements solicited from Psychiatric Nursing Homes & practising Psychiatrists in Tamilnadu. Despite the absence of promotional activity at the time of the conference we received an overwhelming response from all our brethren. Registration charges for both the preconference workshop and the conference was kept to the barest minimum, thereby offering good value for the money spent by the delegates. Despite the allround scepticism about the way the conference would be held, we were able to fulfil the expectations of each & every delegate.

Our success formula…….

More focus was given to academic events than ever. We had two different workshops, 8 concurrent sessions and 5 plenary sessions.  In addition there was the presentation of scientific research work in the form of free paper/ award paper & poster presentation. A separate day was allotted to Undergraduate (MBBS) students including scientific sessions/ Panel discussion and UG Quiz to promote knowledge & attitude towards Psychiatry among them. All the resource person & Speakers supported us by taking care of their travel & stay on their own. Delicious homely food was served though in limited necessary varieties rather than an array of dishes being served in Star hotels. We avoided presenting Mementos/ Bouquet/ Shawls to all Speakers and office bearers, instead they were given Jute bags made by inmates of IMH (Institute of Mental health, Chennai) with Pendrive / Pen.

We had two Stalls at the venue. One stall had the handmade products done by inmates of Institute of Mental Health, Chennai. The second stall had books written & published by our Psychiatrists. The cultural program on the second day evening was performed by our own students and a traditional dance art of Tamilnadu was done by trained artists. A cricket match was conducted for the Psychiatrists & PG students.

This conference was a festival of joy where every delegate participated wholeheartedly partaking the academic feast. We have set the ball rolling . Any conference or CME can be executed by meticulous planning, utilising sparse funds & involving everyone in an institution. This trendsetting Chengalpattu Model of zero Pharma funding is indeed a completely feasible one in any medical speciality across India.
